The nature of digital prepress is to create and generate new data. Prepress organizations handle large amounts of data related to specific printing jobs. In the phase of creation, data is dynamic and evolves from an initial ‘artwork’ stage to a final ‘printing’ stage. When the material is finally printed, the data becomes ‘fixed’.
However, new orders are in many cases based on the efficient re-use of previous printing jobs.
An important and practical aspect arising in many prepress organizations is related to the physical limitations of their existing digital storage environment. Each order implies the creation of new data, whereas finished orders represent fixed, non changing data sets filling up the working server.
